The Mad Max franchise originated in the ’80s and rose like a phoenix from the ashes in 2015. Following the financial success of the action movie Mad Max: Fury Road, Warner Bros released a video game in the same universe.
History shows that games based on movie licenses aren’t the best ones out there. With Mad Max, this isn’t the case. The savage, post-apocalyptic world portrayed here has a lot to offer. It works because it understands the source material. Those familiar with George Miller’s film series will be pleased.

Mad Max is a third-person action game set in a sandbox post-apocalyptic world. It’s an adaptation of Mad Max: Fury Road’s world. But instead of a “play-the-movie” experience, Avalanche delivered a product that is loosely based upon it.
Despite its minor connection to any of the four films, Mad Max is competent at everything it does. The unpleasant, grim wastelands check all the boxes for a modern, open-world game. It has all the elements you’d expect from the franchise - a reluctant hero, treacherous missions, and the ultimate combat vehicle to roam around the desert.
The game offers a 20-hour campaign on a giant map littered with side quests and bonus objectives. However, completionists and car collectors will easily double that number.
Mad Max is powered by Apex Engine, an engine developed by Avalanche, used in Just Cause 2. It was further enhanced during the development of Mad Max and optimized for its open world.
A massive, barren desert is visually attractive, giving different regions distinct themes from Gas Town with its belching smokestacks to sun-bleached white sand with rusty red buttes and boulders. It all blends in a fitting manner that holds up to this day.
A lone warrior, Max Rockatansky travels to the Plains of Silence, hoping to find solace and escape his past. During his journey, he got robbed and beaten by a local gang of marauders. They left him to die under the scorching sun of the desert, without a car and supplies.
Soon after, he meets a strange companion named Chumbucket who worships cars and pledges himself to him, believing he’s a Saint. He’s a very talented mechanic who promises to make the best vehicle to continue his quest.
With the helping hand of his new friend, Max builds a new car so he may seek revenge and get his Interceptor back. Turning his rusty vehicle into a war machine won’t be easy. To get the necessary parts, Max is forced to make deals with local outposts and help them.
There are A LOT of things to do in the desert wastelands. Once you’ve spent an hour or two on the main story, you have a lot of freedom for what you want to do next.
The game is centered around collecting scrap to use for parts - looting bodies, enemy vehicles, and scavenging yards. You need to make friends among local warlords too. Helping them to make their strongholds self-sufficient will help you grow.
To survive, you need to find places to fuel your vehicle and a water source. Water is used to replenish your health in order to stay alive during battles. In the early game, finding necessary resources can be challenging. But as you progress and build a stronghold - this part of the game becomes easier.
The driving aspect is reliable and fun. The vehicles are fast, and turning circles feel just right. Car combat is also satisfying. Smashing into your opponents using nitrous, being blindsided, and knocked off the road feels very impactful. The sudden explosion as your opponent goes down engulfed in flames looks awesome.
Since most of the time you’re going to spend driving, there are a ton of customization options for your vehicle. You can pick from a plethora of different car bodies as you progress. There are 16 different blueprints to find for complete car designs.
You’re also free to build your own combination if you like. Some of the customization options include bumpers, hood ornaments, spikes, body bars, exhaust, suspension, tires, and more. Car enthusiasts are going to love this game!
The same goes for melee combat. It revolves around dodging and countering your opponent’s hits before they do. If you’re familiar with Batman: Arkham series, you’ll get it in no time. Every punch, headbutt, elbow, and kick feels like you hit a truck. Remember, fighting vicious gangs while scavenging the dangerous landscape for supplies is inevitable.
The game also features ranged weapons like shotguns, but ammo is sparse. You can help yourself with Thunderstick, an explosive weapon that blows up when pierced through the enemy’s chest. Also, Max’s car - Magnum Opus, can be equipped with a harpoon, flame throwers, and mounted cannons.
Participate in dangerous side missions as you traverse the wastelands. These include enemy encampments, Deathrun races, various encounters, and more. Find them all riding through the desert!
